How do castings work for performers?
The process for performer castings goes as follows:
XXXtras reach out to all suitable performers with basic information on the project, typically: levels, rates and dates
Interested performers have casting cards created which are shared with the casting director - who then makes their selections
When creating casting cards performers’ will be asked to confirm that they have not had any significant appearance changes since they last submitted details, e.g additional tattoos, major changes in hair, significant weight changes etc. All interested performers will be asked to send a recent selfie showing their current hair length and colour to complete their casting card
Depending on the project, individual performers may be asked if they have additional images they can provide to strengthen their casting card. For example, if the project is for a costume drama, performers who only have images showing heavy modern make up will be asked if they have anything more natural
XXXtras are more than happy to make final image selections if performers are undecided - send several options, we can help narrow it down, but we will not go through your Instagram or other socials seeking out images. You know what images you have and are best placed to pull out the ones that will give you the best chance of being selected
Some casting directors will ask for audition tapes. XXXtras will prepare you for what is required and will help with selecting the best take(s) to provide to the casting team
Once the casting director has made their selections, everyone is informed. Casting teams see a lot of performers and do not always provide reasons for their selections. When a reason is given, that will be passed on, but this is not often the case.
How a performer does in one casting doesn’t impact the next: every production is looking for very specific things. If a performer is not right for Project A, they may be perfect for project B, C or X.
Castings are unfortunately usually done at the last minute. Large companies have a lot to book per scene, and background and specialist extras are at the bottom of the checklist. Please try and respond quickly (when you are able) and be understanding that we may be working against a clock to meet a tight deadline. Selected performers will often be asked to attend costume fittings a few days after they have been selected - at short notice. Fittings and rehearsals do not pay well compared to the shoot day rate, but they are necessary and unless specified otherwise travel is always covered.
